in the room when harry reid was talking about john boehner's brain, that they were really infused by the election. they referenced it so many times in talking about the priorities. specifics were kind of the word of the day. everybody saying the other side has to give specifics. this morning republicans are saying don't expect any public counteroffer after what the president's team presented here, one of their big concerns is the $1.6 trillion in tax revenue over ten years. they say that's about twice where republicans think they might be able to get a deal and for them that was not a good starting point. >> kelly, can i quickly ask you why we should not expect a counteroffer interest republicans? isn't that what this whole game is about? >> reporter: public. if i didn't say public, let me emphasize. >> you did. >> reporter: we heard about the president's offer and what republicans are also saying they are trying hard to not criticize the president publicly, focus on the specifics of the deal. there are concerns about that, not wanting to spoil the move further. at least that's th

of the conditioningal leadership which includes speaker john boehner, perhaps the most important player here. the meetings mark the beginning of the real negotiations. that doesn't mean the posturing stage is behind us. one capitol hill veteran, former fdic, sheila bair, a long-time staffer by the way who butted heads with geithner in the past, made this interesting observation to david gregory about tim geithner saying he's not the right guy for the white house to be sending in for these talks. >> do you think tim geithner, secretary geithner is the right person to lead the negotiations for the administration sf. >> i don't know. i don't think this is tim's strong suit. i think tim was given the job of treasury secretary because he understood the banking system. he's not a budget guy. he's not a tax guy. he's never really worked in this sphere. >> geithner is leading these talks for two reasons. he and the president are very close. they simply click. secondly, boehner likes him. that's why geithner is the front man here. that sometimes matter more than anything else. on wednesday, the presi

cliff house speaker john boehner requested time on fox news to publicly declare the president's opening bid a nonstarter. >> i was flabbergasted. we're nowhere. >> treasury secretary tim geithner did the full ginsberg with taped appearances on all five shows. nothing will happen until budget tax rates and the ball is now in their court. >> the only thing that stands in the way of a deal right now is if a group of republican members decide there have been a block because they can't afford the wealthiest 2% of americans. >> how much is theater and how much are the two sides locked into positions that remain far apart? the president's plan called for higher tax rates on the wealthiest americans to the tune of $1.6 trillion over ten years along with the combination of new spending and some spending cuts. mitch mcconnell said he, quote, burst into laughter. still, the white house is making it clear until the republicans counteroffer. >> we didn't say how or how much or who should pay. >> there are a lot of items on the table. the president knows what they are. the question is, what are they

they would. conservative blogger eric erickson on his blog writing on the same day john boehner, eric cantor and kevin mccarthy punished those for standing up for their convictions sold out their own convictions. erickson wasn't the only 0 group. calling it an $800 billion tax hike. the most conservative media outlets have been in boehner's camp, conservative organizations have a lot of sway with some members. bane earp does not want a full fledged rebellion. a few things to keep in mind. number one, any thought boehner didn't believe he had more control over his conference this time than he did two years ago should be set aside. cantor and mccarthy having his back. he only has to worry if somebody is high profile were somehow to challenge his standing with house republicans. that's not the case. they were in concert on this. does it mean -- send a signal to the white house that this time what boehner says and negotiates goes though it may not be a majority of the majority but boehner is comfortable in the position that he's established. that said, how much is boehner helped by his proposal?

approaching, last night house spaeker john boehner took a break from the fight. . >> god bless us, everyone. and from my family to yours merry christmas. >> five, four, three, two, one. good job. >> well, that was one countdown clock. this morning the president is going to tell a graup of ceos that businesses need the certainty that middle class families won't see their taxes go up it at the end of the year. the president made it clear in his first interview since being re-elected on bloomberg news that he does not plan to budge on the idea of raising tax rates for the wealthiest 2% of americans. >> unfortunately it is still out of balance. $800 billion worth of revenues but he says he'll do that by lowering rates. when you look at the math, it doesn't work. we're going to have to see the top 02% go up. we're not going to be able to to get a deal without it. >> leaving open the possibility that they could come down again next year as part of comprehensive tax reform. >> let's let those go up and then let's set up a process for a time surgeon end of 2013 or the fall of 2013 where we work on
